How to setup a Handheld Radio Gateway
This guide is good for anyone who wants to setup a simple gateway, and for people that live in areas where radio isn't used.

Requirements
- An applicable handheld with a 2-pin Kenwood connector (3.5mm & 2.5mm jacks) AND VOX support
- A computer with an OS installed or any other device which natively support USB-A ports (or USB-A hubs)
- A program so it can go over to the internet (like Zello, MicroSIP, TeamSpeak 3)
- 1x 3.5mm to 2.5mm Jack
- 1x 3.5mm to 3.5mm Jack
- 1x USB Sound Card with 2x 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack ports (if there isn't one already available on your computer, though we do suggest an external one anyway because internal ports can boost volumes and such)
- 2x Ground Loop Noise Isolator / Noise Filter 3.5mm Jack
Steps
Make sure to get all the requirements before proceeding. Without a ground loop noise isolator, the handheld would continously transmit and it will not stop because both the charger and the jacks would send a PTT signal - so get one for each jack.
- On the handheld, be sure to turn on VOX and put the sensitivity to the minimum. If you are having issues, you can always go back and increase it. VOX delay is your own choice, but I suggest either 0.5 seconds or 1 second.
- Plug the 2.5mm jack into the Headphone port, and the 3.5mm jack into the Microphone port.
- At the end of each 3.5mm jack, you must fit in a ground loop isolator, in which there will be another cable sticking out of it, which can be plugged into the computer / USB sound card. You can also fit it directly into the handheld on the 3.5mm side of it.
- Once you've done that, the handheld should not be continously transmitting. Test playback by switching to the output device of it and select anywhere in the volume slider - if it picks that up clearly, it now works.
- Set up a program - TeamSpeak 3 or any other, and make sure to use input/output devices for that in the program via its settings.
- Join any TeamSpeak 3 server, or host your own. Test from TeamSpeak side and test from radio side. If you talk on a radio, it should go through to TeamSpeak. If you talk on TeamSpeak, it should go through to your radio. If that works, then you successfully completed the tutorial.
Notes
- For 24/7 use make sure to put it on charge always. It is normal for the radio to get warm or a little hot if you are using low-powered.
- You can get any external antenna for your handheld if it supports it. You can even put it on the windowsill.
- If you are having issues with the buzzing, make sure to put the noise cancellation on 5 and put it to Hybrid, the lowest threshold too. If you are still having issues, increase it a little bit higher. The choice is yours.
